Frequently
Asked
Questions

What can I expect from therapy?

Therapy experiences can be as diverse and varied as clients themselves; some folks prefer to arrive at sessions with a list, and others feel uncertain where to begin. Similarly, some people appreciate direction and guided approaches, while others thrive in an open space to freely explore their thoughts and feelings. I will meet you at your starting point, and tailor our sessions to your needs. While beginning therapy may generate feelings of unease for some, you can always expect to feel heard and validated.

How do I know if we're a good "fit"?

Finding the right therapist really depends on how you feel when speaking with that person, and how they are able to approach your concerns and respond to your feelings. The initial telephone consultation offers an opportunity to get an initial sense of this, and offers a chance for you to ask any questions you may have. Developing a meaningful and trusting therapeutic relationship is the foundation for change. It is important that you feel as confident and comfortable as possible in your choice.

3

Are services confidential?

All services are fully confidential, unless you provide written consent for your information to be shared. Before we begin our work together, we will discuss legal exceptions to this rule, which include:

  • if there is reason to believe there is an immediate risk to harm yourself or someone else

  • if a child under the age of 16 or resident in Long Term Care is at risk of abuse or neglect

  • if your file or therapist is subpoenaed by court

4

Are sessions covered by insurance?

Please contact your insurance provider directly to determine the details of your coverage and your eligibility for services provided by a Registered Social Worker. Once payment is received, you will be provided with a receipt to claim reimbursement from your insurance provider.

I am an Approved Provider with the Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) Program for First Nations and Inuit clients who hold eligibility. These services are billed directly to NIHB and may be offered at no cost to eligible clients.

5

Is virtual therapy really effective?

Many people report experiencing the same degree of connection with a therapist when accessing services virtually, with numerous added advantages:

  • feelings of comfort and ease from being in your own space

  • greater accessibility fitting sessions into your schedule

  • eliminating time and costs associated with travelling to sessions

  • expanding selection of a therapist throughout Ontario; choosing a therapist based on expertise and fit rather than proximity

6

How often, and for how long, will I need to attend therapy?

The frequency and duration of therapy depends largely on your presenting issue and goals; specific concerns may be resolved more quickly, while complex challenges may warrant more extensive exploration. Meeting on a weekly or bi-weekly basis when starting therapy can be helpful to gain traction and foster the therapeutic relationship. In later stages of treatment, it is common to reduce the frequency of sessions, or for clients to reach out on an "as needed" basis for periodic support and to maintain the gains achieved.
